Short courses for visitors

This August, Centre for Lifelong Learning in the Westfjords (Fræðslumiðstöð Vestfjarða), will offer three different courses taught in English. The aim is to give our guests in the Westfjords a glimpse of the nature, history, and craft in the area by introducing birds, archaeology and the Icelandic wool.

The courses are:

Birds and bird sites in Westfjords
Breeding birds in Iceland, migrating birds and vagrants. Important bird sites in the Westfjords and bird sites close to Ísafjörður. How to recognise birds. Laws and regulations. If weather permits we will go out for bird watching in the area for 30-45 minutes.

  • Time: Thursday August 5th at 6pm ? 8 pm

  • Instructor: Böðvar Þórisson, biologist at Westfjords natural history institute

  • Course fee: 4.200 ISK


Archaeology in the Westfjords
The aim of the lecture is to give a brief introduction to the archaeology of the Westfjords peninsula. The focus will be on the nature of the settlement and its development from the settlement period to the present.

  • Time: Thursday August 12th at 6pm ? 8 pm

  • Instructor: Dr. Ragnar Edvardsson, regional archaeologist

  • Course fee: 4.200 ISK


Wool felting ? make your own scarf
Wool felting - learn how to make scarves and shawls from Icelandic wool.

  • Time: Monday August 16th at 6pm ? 9 pm or Tuesday August 17th at 6pm ? 9 pm

  • Instructor: Sigríður Magnúsdóttir, local craftswoman

  • Course fee: 8.800 ISK, all material included
